Pink Dot started out as a grassroots initiative at a town hall meeting. In November 2008, some 20 people responded to an open call for ideas. Over drinks at a bar, they shared their ideas and views on putting together a Speakers Corner event in support of LGBT Singaporeans.
What transpired were two consecutive years of social campaigns that have reached thousands of Singaporeans, straight and gay.
In 2009, the inaugural Pink Dot event drew a 2,500-strong crowd to Speakers Corner. It was, then, the largest public gathering ever recorded at the park, and the first to champion LGBT interests. Online, the 'Freedom to Love' message reached tens of thousands on Blogger, YouTube and Facebook.
2010's 'Focusing on our Families' theme drew thousands of people to read and watch (and cry over too, we've been told) the campaign's real-life stories. On 15 May 2010, more than 4,000 people showed up at the Speakers Corner in a massive show of support for LGBT Singaporeans and their families.

Dear Pink dot, are you tired of organising events and running around all by yourself/just the few key members? If holding the event annually is too exhausting, then perhaps you can organise it every two/three/four years? (Why are the Olympics held every four year?) No matter what, I love you. :)

YES FOR PINK DOT 2011! I missed it for this year, cause of PSLE :(( I was pissed that i couldn't go, instead having to stay at home doing horrendous math. Ugh.

oh my goodness yes, i have long supports the rights of the LGBT coomunity and to encourage equal support of each other despite sexual differnences i hope Pink dot will continue to happen every year, i should my partner the videos about LGBT familes on youtube from this years pink dot and we both plan to travel from australia to singapore for Pink Dot 2011 and beyound

ReplyDeleteIt's really a pity that I only got to know of Pinkdot today. Thus I missed out all of the previous events. In order for me to make up for the lost opportunity, you should organise it again in 2011!!! I totally support LGBT community. :) Please do organise it again!

I only knew about Pink Dot today after it was highlighted by a coursemate in my Gender Studies module in a university. Please do keep up this campaign, it brings hope to many out there!

This may sound crass to the Gay community and repulsive to the majority but as far as I'm concerned i think its great and would not be possible without Pink Dot.
I remember having a lot of fun at the London Pride events when i was younger and wonder if that will ever happen here
